Liposuction - Body Sculpture

What is Body Sculpture?

Body Sculpture Liposuction is an outpatient procedure to remove unwanted fat and sculpt the silhouette of the body. This procedure is extremely safe, since it is performed using local anesthesia instead of the patient being put to sleep using general anesthesia. The procedure involves the use of a combination of pre-operative oral medications, to relax you, and a tumescent local anesthetic. First, the tumescent solution is infiltrated into where the fat is to be removed. This process does two things - it numbs the tissues so you don't experience discomfort during the procedure, and it also helps to melt the fat so that it can be removed more easily. Once these areas are anesthetized (numb) and the fat is liquefied, Dr. Jao makes tiny incisions about 1/4 inch. Through these tiny incisions, a thin straw-like instrument called a micro cannula is inserted and the fat is gently suctioned away. Not only is fat removed, but Dr. Jao will shape and contour the body in the process creating a more pleasing silhouette. The average procedure take about 2 - 2.5 hours depending upon how many areas the patient chooses to have done.

Is It Painful?

You are very relaxed during the procedure due to the combination or oral medications given to you prior to the procedure. In the beginning of the procedure, the most common response from patients is that there is a feeling of pressure. This is due to the large volume of the solution we inject which melts the fat and numbs the area. Once the suctioning of the fat has begun, the pressure goes away. As the fat is suctioned, patients report feeling that they are having a gentle massage.

When Can I Go Back to Work?

Typically, there is little or no downtime at all with this procedure. However, everyone heals differently. Some patients return to work the very next day. Others feel more comfortable taking a couple of days off. You will have to decide what is best for you depending upon what your job duties are.

What Will I Feel Like the Next Day?

The day after the procedure you will feel sore. Most patients describe it as feeling like they had an intense workout and their muscles are very sore. Most of the patients just take over-the-counter medications after the procedure to alleviate the soreness. Very few patients request prescription pain medication afterwards.

Will My Skin Remain Tight After the Fat is Removed?

Certain techniques are performed during the procedure that will help to promote collagen production and skin tightening. However, every person is different and those individuals that have poor skin elasticity prior to the procedure most likely will not see a significant improvement in the tightening of their skin. We highly recommend lymphatic massage for all patients after the procedure which will help to further smooth and tighten the skin during the healing process.

Am I a Candidate?

Most everyone is a candidate. As long as you don't have any major health issues, you can have the procedure. We have treated patients of all ages, shapes and sizes. It is common to treat patients who are in great shape who diet and exercise regularly, overweight patients, or even obese patients with great success.

Is the Result Permanent?

This procedure will permanently remove fat cells and therefore gives you a permanent result. Of course, we encourage you to eat healthy after the procedure in order to maintain the best result possible. However, if you do gain weight back, it is unlikely the treated area will get as big as it was prior to the procedure because now there are less fat cells there to store the fat.

How Long before I See the Results?

The first week after the procedure you may feel swollen and actually feel a little bigger than when you came in to have your procedure. Most patients start to notice improvements in their body contour in about 7 to 10 days. As the swelling and inflammation subsides, you will continue to see changes in your body. The most noticeable result will appear after 1 month. However, you will continue to see changes for the next several months. Because it takes time for the swelling to go down and the skin to tighten, it will take 3-4 months for the final result to be achieved.
